Have Baby, Will Travel
A few months ago, Zach and I took a spontaneous trip to Vegas. I mean, we just grabbed our bags and went, arriving at about 1am. It was incredible. We had the most fun and we loved that there was no planning, no schedule, and no responsibilities.
Fast forward to the present... traveling is, well... different. It's all about planning and scheduling, and responsibility. Last weekend we joined Zach's family in Cayucos for a beach vacation. There was nothing get-up-and-go about it. There were lists and text messages and grocery trips and online searches about traveling with an infant. And there was definitely a lot that we forgot. Fortunately none of it concerned the baby, but neither or us remembered to grab our own jackets or socks. We have decided that between the two of us, we have about three braincells left, so we must choose how to use them wisely. On our way to Vegas we stopped for In-N-Out. On this trip we stopped to change a diaper and feed Baby M. Not nearly as fun. But the sounds of him playing and cooing in the backseat made us laugh and we still were able to do one of our favorite things - hold hands and drive. The trip was wonderful, relaxed, and fun. Baby M was loved on by family and Zach and I had several chances to walk on the beach on talk.
While the occasional spontaneous trip is awesome, the planning is worth it. The joy of being able to give Baby M these experiences far outweighs anything I miss about our trip to Vegas. I'm sure we'll take a trip like that again. But we'll definitely have to make sure we know where the nearest Target is. And rest stops. I guess we just have to redefine spontaneous.
I do remember those days :)
ReplyDeleteAww so true how different travel is with kids! My dad in-law has a cup that says see every rest stop travel with kids! Shawn & I used to me able to make it to Washington in 16- 18 hrs. Now it is we see at least every other rest stop and we stay over night to finish travel the next day! I am glad you are loving & embracing every moment!
